More about sauna hats

Every Schvitzin sauna hat is 100% merino wool. Wool keeps the heat off your head, so you stay comfortable in the sauna longer. Pick the Original if you sauna every week and want a hat for life. Pick the Starter if you're new to sauna hats or want a lighter bucket style.

Which sauna hat is right for you?

The Original Sauna Hat ($170) is our signature hat, rated 5.0 stars across 20 reviews. It uses thick, undyed American merino wool felted in Nebraska, with no binders or chemical treatments, and is hand-assembled in New Jersey without adhesives. An adjustable strap with an Italian leather buckle fits all head sizes. Built for regulars who want one hat that lasts for years.

The Schvitzin Starter ($55) is a relaxed bucket-style sauna hat in 100% merino wool, with our penguin embroidered on the front. It comes in a few limited colors that won't be restocked. A good first sauna hat, or a gift for someone just getting into the sauna.

Why wear a hat in the sauna?

Your head heats up faster than the rest of your body, and that's usually what drives people out of the sauna early. A wool sauna hat insulates your head and ears from the hottest air near the ceiling, so you can sit comfortably for your full session. It also helps protect your hair from heat and dryness. Why merino wool?

Wool is the traditional sauna hat material in Finnish saunas and Russian banyas for a reason. It insulates against heat, handles moisture and stays comfortable against your skin. Cotton and synthetics either trap sweat or heat up fast. Merino is softer and less itchy than coarse wool. See why wool works best for sauna hats and our guide to sauna hat styles and materials.

Sauna hat FAQ

Do sauna hats actually work?
Yes. A wool hat slows how fast your head heats up, which is the most common reason people leave the sauna early.

Should I wet my sauna hat first?
Some people dip it in cool water before going in for extra cooling. Either way works.

How do I wash a wool sauna hat?
Hand wash cold and lay flat to dry. Don't wring it or put it in the dryer. Full instructions are in our sauna hat care guide.

What size should I get?
Both hats are one size. The Original has an adjustable strap to fit any head.
